Fear About Story Originality? Check This Out.

As a fiction writer, I get really irked when after putting in much effort in a manuscript, I find out that a movie (I hadn't seen prior to the writing of my story) has almost the same story line as mine. I feel dissed and the once upon a time best story - which I was very proud of - becomes another waste of time.

This unfortunate mishap continued for quite sometime and I was fast losing the interest to put down the things - always - playing in my imagination (After all, there are dozens who are seeing the exact same thing I'm seeing - or even better!)

But my coach straightened me out! I've gotten back to scribbling my thoughts again and I don't care who's thinking the same thing I am.

Here's what my coach said that saved me:
"Boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy wins girl back… This idea has been the basis of innumerable novels, movies, and TV shows, and it still hasn't been used up.
Your story will be interesting not because of your idea but because of the specific way it plays out.
If you create a character who feels real and alive, readers will find him interesting. If you put that character in a situation where he has the chance to get something he badly wants -- or where he's in danger of losing something that matters to him -- readers will be interested in your story.
But if you're still worried about originality, here are a couple of thoughts:
1) Your brain is unique. There's no one else exactly like you, and there's no one else who would write a particular story exactly the way you would. Even if you're not aware of having a particular style, it's still there.
2) Originality isn't really something you have to work at -- it happens naturally. But if you want to make your writing more original, the best thing you can do is to read. Read lots of different authors. Get exposed to lots of influences. Your brain will combine those influences in interesting ways and turn them into something new.
Trust yourself."
I'm saying the same thing to you.

Happy writing,
