Choose the Right Place to Have a Sensitive Discussion - Management Tip

Image
When you’re trying to resolve a conflict with a colleague, the venue will have an effect on whether you both feel able to speak freely, express any emotions, and reach a resolution. Select a location where you’ll both be comfortable. Ideally, you want the conversation to happen face-to-face and in private. Maybe you’ll meet in a neutral conference room or at a nearby coffee shop . Or you might take a walk outside together for a change of scenery. Avoid choosing a place that gives you or your coworker an advantage. Inviting someone into your office puts you in a power position, for example, because it’s your space and you’re the one sitting behind a desk. And when choosing a conference room, think about who’s in the adjacent rooms. Sometimes walls are thinner than you think. HOW TO USE YOUR HANDS TO PROJECT CONFIDENCE DURING YOUR PITCH

Image
Did you know that communication takes two forms -the verbal and non verbal? And of course when both conflict, the non verbal is (consciously or unconsciously) validated. Do you know how horrifying this can be? Imagine preparing the best presentation – world class type – and then mess it up by being fidgety or frowning or even showcasing fear! Why take the trouble to gather or face an audience (believe me, it’s not easy to do this) and then muddle it up by communicating the opposite of your intention? Have you ever watched a Chinese movie that’s not translated yet you still watch it to the end? Why would you watch a movie that you don’t understand Jack of what they are saying? Because somehow, you can relate with shouts, facial expressions, body language and other tiny bits – this is non verbal communication doing its thing. Some of the action could be misunderstood, because the verbal and non verbal are supposed to go hand in hand (complement each other). But the fact remains...

THE ULTIMATE POWER

Image
Everyone holds his fortune in his own hands, like a sculptor the raw material he will fashion into a figure. But it’s the same with that type of artistic activity as with all others: We are merely born with the capability to do it. The skill to mold the material into what we want must be learnt and attentively cultivated. -  Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe As I travel through this world and meet diverse people – both real and virtual – I have come to the understanding that the term Gift or Talent has been thoroughly misunderstood – actually overrated. People don’t just excel because they have inert abilities or are genetically endowed. No. They become geniuses because they consciously hone a skill to the level of mastery. This of course does not rule out the possibilities of inert abilities. In fact, I believe that no one was born empty. But if you do not do anything with this ability or talent – like the unfaithful servant in the bible illustration – you will not make ...

Living vs Existing

Image
Do you know that there's a  huge  difference between  living  and  just  existing ? Everyone that is born into this planet will have a space in the  earth's  history book. This space records that you existed on this planet at a certain time. That's all. But when it comes to living, your works, while you exist, are recorded on marble. This marble is the hearts of men that will live generations after you. Unfortunately, a great percentage of the human race are just existing and not living. When you ask most young males what (and where) they want to be in the future, most already have default answers. It is what they refer to as the perfect plan - that is, if all things are equal. Unfortunately, all things are never equal. Their responses usually go thus: I will have my masters at 23 (or 25). I will get a good job in a bank or oil company (the course studied is not even put into consideration). I will own 3 cars and have a sizable amount in ...

Legacy vs Inheritance

Image
In this part of the world, inheritance is taken so seriously that it often leads to strife or total destruction of families of the decedent. These days, most youths (especially from wealthy descents) depend on their prospective inheritance and thus aspire to be nothing. Their belief would be, why labour when the result for it (labour) is already given free of charge? Inheritance is the passing of title or ownership of physical properties (and even debts) to another (mostly family members) by a person upon death. Most reasonable people love the idea of leaving a good inheritance for loved ones but is that all you leave behind? Would you like to be remembered like Steve Jobs or Nelson Mandela? Both were great men and did great things while they walked this earth. The former was the co-founder of Apple Inc. while the latter was the former president of South Africa, an activist and philanthropist. Both left inheritance for the people they left behind, but something was different be...

How to Help Others - by Juliet Ambali

Image
Making other people better at something requires more effort than we need to make ourselves better at the same thing. In other words, it is much easier to tell somebody what they should do if they can see we have done the same thing ourselves. Our lives say much more than our mouths can ever articulate. How we talk to people, how we react to situations, in whom we put our faith, how promptly and genuinely we care about other people, and a host of other life matrices combine to give us away quicker than we are ready to defend ourselves. So, the work starts with us. We are better placed to suggest strategies to other people only if we have applied such strategies--or similar ones--to our lives, and we are currently prospering as a result of that. It is easier for people to believe what has previously worked for someone else. This explains why big organisations spend a lot of money inviting successful people to talk to their members of staff. People with success stories tend to...

LAW OF CHANGE: History Repeats Itself Until We Learn From it And Change Our Path - Karma

Image
Have you ever tried to wish things away or pretend a particular problem will go away if you just ignore it? I have; a considerable number of times. But do they go away? Most times, they don't. Let's take this scenario for an example: you visit a doctor for your regular check-up and the learned man advises you to watch your diet because you are becoming obese; or, your bank account radar tells you that you are on the fast lane to bankruptcy - if you continue in your loud lifestyle. Then what do you do? Relax and wish it away? I've heard many advice that sometimes, all you need to do is to give " that challenge"  some time - allow it slide - and things would get sort out (by itself). Most times, we declare, It will pass, give it time. But does every problem require this passive approach? No. Going back to the sited examples above, if you don't heed your doctor's advice by actively  watching your diet, you will end up obese and sick. And of course, ...

Education: A Powerful Weapon of Change - Nelson Mandela

Image
In her last address as the United States Of America's first lady, Michelle Obama kept reiterating the need for good education. In all her speeches to the young people, she never descended the podium without telling them the importance of good  and sound  education. I can't forget her last speech where she said that with good education, you can aspire to be anything in the world, even the President of the USA.  This touched me. In my school days, my lecturers, in their bid to encourage (and threaten) us to study beyond the school syllables, always told us that the school can only give us 30% of the education we need. The remaining 70%, we have to get ourselves through ardent reading, studying, researches, observing and of course, experience.
